Painting Nature in Nim Qalam (Siyah Qalam)
Nim qalam in Persian means “half pen” while Siyah means “black.” Derived from Persian and Mughal artistic traditions, Siyah Qalam is a drawing technique that utilizes black ink or paint to create expressive monochrome artworks.

For 16 and up, this class is open to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced artists.
5 Sessions of 3 hours each (15 hours total)
Session 1: Preparing paper
Sessions 2 and 3: Painting Landscapes
Sessions 4 and 5: Birds of the Quran
Course Fee: $230

Cancellations made at least 7 days before the class start date will receive a full refund or may opt for class credit. No refunds will be issued after that.
If the class is canceled due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances, a full refund will be issued.
Instructor Bio:
Lubna Zahid is a classically trained fine artist who works in mixed media. Strongly influenced by contemporary and classical calligraphy in Urdu, Arabic, and Persian, her pieces include texts in these languages. She experiments with bold renditions of Islamic decorative forms such as the Shamsa. Lubna received calligraphy and illumination training from master calligrapher Abbas Baghdadi.
Lubna has exhibited her work in the United States and Pakistan. She teaches workshops and seminars on art and art history in various venues including the Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Galleries. She lives in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.
