Course description

Developed during the Ottoman era for scribes for use in official documents and fast note taking, Rik’a script has an ease and charm all its own. Rik’a is a good beginning script for students to attune themselves to use of pen and ink on paper before moving onto more artistic styles.

In this short introductory class we will look at samples of Rika (Arabic Ruq’a) and get to know how to use the pen. We will learn the independent letters and then the letter connections.

This is a good class for beginners or those wanting to get a feel for the Arabic alphabet. No prior experience is necessary.

What you will learn:

  • Fundamentals of Arabic calligraphy and the Rik’a script .

  • Introduction to tools and methods for artistically writing Arabic letters.

  • Practice writing Arabic letters and letter connections in the Rik’a script.

Materials you will need:

Reed Pen/Bamboo Pen (2.5- 3.5 mm) alternatively you can use a Pilot parallel pen

Glossy white paper or translucent vellum paper

Non-waterproof black ink (such as Yasutomo Sumi Ink)

Inkwell with silk bamboo yarn
